Personal Spa – Tranquillity in a home bathroom

Personal Spa – Tranquility in a home bathroom

Having purchased an apartment ‘off plan’ my client’s wanted a bespoke design for their bathroom that could be incorporated into the builders planned works.  The new design was developed taking visual cue’s from Pinterest boards they had made of their dream bathroom, which was a really fun starting point.  The goal was to create an exceptional bathroom that provided a space of tranquility to be savored for years to come.

Tranquility goes hand in hand with calm & with this in mind, the bathroom minimises junctions & details, looking to resolve these with simple vertical & horizontal lines.  These become the subtle backing track to the curves that highlight the interaction points; an elliptical hand basin, round beauty mirror freestanding & oval bath. Extra prominence is given to the bath by being the only item at an angle in the room.  Sitting naturally lit under the window with glimpses of the trees & greenery outside; even though it is placed in the corner it really becomes the centre piece for the room.

Creating a sense of space was also key to ensuring this was a comfortable room to enjoy.  To this end the surfaces are kept as clear as possible & the furnishings are detailed to allow day to day clutter to be kept accessible but neatly stowed.

The sauna partition provides a sense of journey, increasing this impression of space as the room is seen to extend around the corner.  The glazed corner creates depth and interest in obscuring precisely what lies beyond, & allows natural light to flood the full depth of the room.

The shower is slightly epic at  2.8 metres high & has the freedom of being walk in; so no doors or screens to be negotiated.  While it’s next to the sauna the dividing wall between the two ensures that the actual shower area is discretely out of view from the sauna benches.

The black & white colour scheme provides a sense of drama without undue distraction & leaves room for the quality of fittings to come to the fore.  While main room is majority white with black punctuation, the sauna distinguishes as the complimentary counterpoint to this. Black walls, floor, & ceiling create a separately cocooned space.  Warmly stained benches add a necessary dash of colour and allude to the heat available at your disposal.

Inside the sauna it is clear that this is a special place removed from the rest of the room.  At the same time, due to the glazed partition, it avoids any feeling of being closed in, & in keeping the window in view furthers the feeling of openness, providing something of a view to be enjoyed.

All in all what has now been created is a bathroom with some distinct wow factor, but has qualities that build on that wow and turn it into long lasting pleasure and enjoyment.
